What Is JavaScript?

In some ways, JavaScript is the programming language that made the World Wide Web what it is today.

While the World Wide Web was created in 1989 by a British scientist by the name of Tim Berners-Lee, its advent had little to do with how it is used today.

Lee, who worked at a research organization called CERN, simply wanted to share information with other scientists like himself. And after developing the first web browser in 1990, this tool, so to speak, was in fact rolled out to other research institutions.

The Mosaic browser, whose creators later founded Netscape, was the first web browser with a graphic user interface marketing itself to non-technical consumers who played a large role in the World Wide Web’s exponential growth. This was in 1993.

From then on, Netscape decided to improve upon its initial innovation. At this point, web pages could not do much more than click and load. Netscape sought to change that.

In the process, they developed a new browser and started embedding programming languages to alter the user experience.

Finally, they determined that creating a new programming language would be the best solution, and so became JavaScript. JavaScript’s original legacy to make web pages come alive is demonstrated by its features.

Features Of JavaScript:

1. Validating User’s Input

JavaScript is very useful while using forms. It has the capability to validate user input for errors and also saves time.

2. Simple Client-side Calculations

Since JavaScript is a client-side technology, it can perform basic calculations on the browser. The browser does not need to ask server time for every task.

3. Greater Control

JavaScript provides greater control to the browser rather than being completely dependent on the web servers.

4. Platform Independent

Since browsers interpret JavaScript, it solves the problem of compilation and compatibility. Thus it can run on Windows, Macintosh, and other Netscape-supported systems. Also, it is possible to embed them in any other script like Html that keeps JavaScript into use.

5. Handling Dates and Time

Unlike other programming languages, JavaScript has built-in functions to determine the date and time.

6. Generating HTML Content

JavaScript has very handy features to dynamically generate HTML content for the web. It allows us to add text, links, images, tables.

1. Improvement in Web Interface

In these days, what we are doing with JavaScript is we enhance the old, tired and true web interface — clicking links, entering information and sending off, etc — to be more responsive to the end-user.

For example — A sign-up form can check if your name is available when you enter it, preventing you from having to reloading the page.

2. Word Suggestion in Search Box

A search box can give you suggested results when you type, based on what has been entered so far.

For example — “bi”, could bring up suggestions to choose from that contain the string such as “bird”, “big”, and “bicycle”. This usage pattern is called Autocomplete.

3. Instant Update of Information

Information that changes constantly can load continuous without the need for user interactions.

For example — Sports match results or stock market tickers.

4. Loading Information Only When User Choose

Information that is nice to have and runs the risk of being redundant to some users can be loaded when and if the user chooses to access it.

For example — The navigation menu of a site can contain 6 links but display It , and leave it to the user to choose it.

5. Fixing Layout Issues

It can find the position and area of the element on the particular page and the dimensions of the browser window. By implementing this information you can stop overlapping elements and other similar issues.

For example — You may have a menu with several levels by clicking and checking if there is space for the submenu to appear before showing it, you can prevent scroll bars or overlapping menu items.

6. Enhancing HTML Interface

JavaScript can enhance the interfaces that HTML gives us. While it’s nice to have a text input box, you might want to have a combo box or decorated box ,so you can use Javascript in it.

7. Animation of Page Elements

JavaScript helps to animate elements on a page to show and hide information or highlight specific sections of a page and make it more usable and richer user experience.

JavaScript is a client server language which is used for creating web pages .It is a standalone language developed in Netscape. It is used when a webpage is to be made dynamic and add special effects on pages like rollover, roll out and many types of graphics. It is mostly used by all websites for the purpose of validation. In addition to validations, it supports external applications like PDF documents, running widgets, supporting for flash applications etc. It can also load content into a document whenever the user requires it without even reloading the entire page.
